Did you know that most MP offices have a "google alert" on their names, bills, and the names of each party? That means if you write a letter to the editor mentioning a specific bill, MP or party and it gets published in a newspaper or blog, not only will everyone who reads that paper see it but there is a high chance that it will hit Parliament Hill as well.
Here are some tips
- Be concise. Pick one main point, and stick to it. If you have multiple points, write multiple letters.
- Keep it short. Letters that are around 250 words are more likely to be published that longer letters (another reason to keep to one point).
- You don't have to stick to your local paper, you can submit your letter to any and every newspaper in Canada.
- Make sure you include your name and contact information (including your phone number). It won't be published, but editors may use it to confirm that you wrote the letter before they publish it.
Make A Youtube Video
Another great way to get your voice heard is to make a youtube video. Again, keep it short (2-5 minutes unless it's a documentary). Make sure your camera is not moving (rest it on something or use your built-in webcam), and that you have good lighting and sound. Filming outside and away from wind usually works best. Smile and speak clearly, then upload it to youtube and blast it through your Facebook and Twitter!
